Hello and welcome to The Drumming Barista official blog.
Thank you for taking the time to join me and for reading this article. This is the first of many to come so to kick off I wanted to give an insight into the 'why' behind The Drumming Barista.
The Drumming Barista was created in November 2018 on Instagram when I landed my second barista job at Fellow Cafe, Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. It was purely intended as a place for me to upload pictures of latte art and keep a record/track of my progress and this is how the page stayed for roughly a year. I then moved on from Fellow to the big city of Wellington where I began working for Flight Coffee at their flagship cafe the Hangar.
During my time training to become a barista I searched high and low for an Instagram profile that was easy to follow, entertaining, informative (but not over the top), engaging and inspirational for a trainee/home barista.
The ironic thing is, I found a lot of profiles that fit the mould and had an amazing time connecting with people, but soon came to realise that within New Zealand no one was creating content accessible for home baristas and baristas in training.
This began phase 2 of The Drumming Barista Instagram community.
Covid-19 hit the shores of New Zealand and in April 2020 the country went into a 6-week lockdown. Strange time for everyone, but an amazing creative time for me. As all my fellow hospitality staff closed the cafes down for a forced 6 week holiday, it was time to try and keep the NZ coffee community connected by brewing and drinking great coffee at home.
I made the most of the 6 weeks by creating a vision board and content plan which would allow me to grow the community, connect with new people, home baristas, coffee professionals and local brands. I created video tutorials of brewing coffee at home with coffee equipment that most people would have on hand at home, i.e french press and Hario v60.
The idea of these videos was to be super clear and informative and busting the jargon of coffee brewing and giving everybody a sense of confidence when it came to trying new techniques in brewing coffee that they may never have heard or seen before.
This mandate of "Making Coffee Easy and Accessible For Everyone" stays true in this present moment. The Drumming Barista is a growing community of coffee and cocktail lovers around the world.
When creating recipes for coffee or cocktail(s) the mindset behind them is to keep them fun, engaging, approachable and easy for people to create at home. I try to be as open, clear and informative as I can when writing my descriptions for those followers who save the posts for later reference.
Starting Friendships and making connections
Another side of The Drumming Barista that has happened in the past 12 months is connecting with local brands and local small-batch coffee roasters and showcasing their products through my page for my followers to see, get inspired by and buy their products. This has helped the growth, vision and creativity to grow and has inspired me to keep creating, mixing, shaking and talking about everything coffee and cocktails.
I cannot wait to share more insight, experiences and recipes on this blog for you all to enjoy.
Thank you for reading!
